About the Doe Thornburg Scholarship
The International Women Associates (IWA), founded in 1978 by Doe Thornburg, is a 501(c)(3) Chicago cultural and educational organization whose members engage in cross-cultural exchange, community service, dialogue and friendship. By creating connections among people of diverse international backgrounds through our programs and with other organizations, IWA works toward establishing a more just and peaceful world. IWA has a membership of over 500 women with diverse international backgrounds representing 58 countries.
In keeping with IWA’s vision to promote understanding and cooperation among people of all nations, IWA offers a scholarship to help support a female undergraduate student who is studying abroad. Scholarships are awarded annually to each of the IWA Partner Institutions.*
Scholarship value: US $1,000.00 (applicable only to tuition and course-related expenses).
Eligibility Criteria:
• Female student who is a US citizen or US permanent resident;
• Undergraduate degree-seeking student attending an IWA Partner Institution* and studying abroad for
at least one semester (Fall or Spring semesters only. Summer programs are not eligible).
• Student accepted in a university-affiliated study abroad program;
• Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0.
IWA Board Members and Scholarship Selection Committee and their family members are not eligible.
Scholarship Award Criteria:
The applicant should identify her experiences, skills and personal goals. She should explain why she wants to study abroad and how doing so would fulfill the mission of IWA. The following information should also be included:
