Bulgaria, a rewarding and often over-looked destination –
and a country that saved the Jews during the Holocaust
Program: The Consul General of Bulgaria, Mr. Svetoslav Stankov, will provide us with an overview of the rich history of Bulgaria, the history of the Jewish Community in Bulgaria, and the little-known heroic efforts to help the Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust.
Bulgaria is one of the oldest states in Europe. It borders five countries. To the south, it borders with Greece and Turkey, on the west it meets the borders of North Macedonia and Serbia, and to the north Romania. There are several places in Bulgaria where you can look out over three countries at once. Bulgaria has an unusually rich cultural heritage. The country’s landscape is as diverse as its past. Famous for its coast, which meets the Black Sea, the interior parts of the country are home to gentle mountains, raging rivers, and endless forests. It is also famous for being the homeland of yogurt as well as one of the world’s largest producers of lavender and rose oil.
