Film (to be discussed): The Big City (1963)
Director: Satyajit Ray
The Big City is a portrayal of contemporary life in Ray’s native Kolkata. The story follows the personal triumphs and frustrations of the main female character, Arati, who decides, despite the initial protests of her bank-clerk husband, to take a job to help support their family. This is a powerful human drama that is at once a hopeful morality tale and a commentary on the identity of the modern Indian woman.
The movie is in black and white with English subtitles.
