English-Speaking World and Turkish Culture Joint Program

Program: U.S. Policy in the Middle East

The Middle East is mired in one of the most unstable periods in its modern history. While each country faces unique challenges, a range of cross-border issues shape the wider region,

from proxy warfare and terrorism to migration and shifting regional alliances.

A decade after the Arab Spring began, what are the key issues most likely to face the next U.S. administration? How should the US deploy its diplomatic, military, and other assets to meet these challenges? And what are the limits of American engagement?

    Presenter: Joe Yackley

Joe Yackley is a diplomat at the US State Department, currently based in Istanbul, Turkey from where he reports on Iran. Prior to joining the Department of State, Joe roamed around Europe and the Middle East as a journalist, consultant, and academic. He has held fellowships from the Robert Bosch Foundation, the International Center for Journalists, and the Fulbright Program. Joe holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago, where his dissertation is still prescribed to treat acute cases of insomnia.  He is a co-author of a marginally more interesting book on international political risk, entitled "Risk Rules: How Local Politics Threaten the Global Economy.” Most importantly, he is the son of IWA stalwart, Sel Yackley.

    Program: “Women’s Voices Worldwide”

Ferrante, Tokarczuk, Kang . . . Wonderful women in translation! In 2015, publishing consultant Alta L. Price learned that under 3% of books published in the U.S. originated in another language; of those, under 26% were by women. Join Alta to discuss how that’s changing, and share your book tips.

Speaker: IWA member Alta L. Price runs a publishing consultancy specialized in literature and nonfiction texts on art, architecture, design, and culture. She translates from Italian and German into English, and her work has appeared on BBC Radio 4, 3 Quarks Daily, Specimen, and elsewhere. She is an active member of PEN America, the Authors Guild, and the American Literary Translators Association. In 2019, she was featured in Newcity magazine’s Lit 50. She grew up in New York, studied in Italy, has done residencies across Europe, and moved to Chicago in 2017.

Asia-Pacific, European, and Turkish Culture Joint Program

    The Silk Roads Part IV

Presenter: The Nourishment Projects (Soma Roy)

    A Bed: the layers

When minutiae, small as a pea, differentiates a plebeian from a princess, a bed is no longer mere furniture. One’s sense of subliminal security is revealed by the preference of material, location and design. From the penitent —a bed of nails — to the sybaritic — a bed of roses — lifestyle is but one of the determinants when selecting a bed.

Mae West’s Swan bed, Elvis Presley’s Hamburger bed and the historical Great Bed of Ware all accommodated the owner’s quicksilver needs for rest and play. A constant presence from cradle to grave, come discover how across generations this chameleon morphs seamlessly from a sanctuary to a lair.

Member Engagement Program: Jewelry and Journeys

We all love to travel, and although it is more difficult now, we likely have mementos from around the world in our jewelry boxes. Whether it was a gift, or a souvenir to remind us of a special place, we have pieces and stories to go along with them. Join us for a discussion as we "travel the world through our jewelry." Choose up to two items that you would like to share.

Once you are registered you can also submit a photo of your pieces to get other members excited. You can email the photos to: bmcalabrese@gmail.com
