English-Speaking World: Global Conflicts Signal Breakdown of Post-WWII Neo-Liberal Order

Hybrid program - in-person and on Zoom

PROGRAM: The post-WWII intergovernmental institutions GATT and WTO were premised on the belief that trade would prevent war. We are now seeing a trend away from that, with moves toward self-sufficiency and changing alliances among the world powers. Mexico, for example, has recently nationalized its supply of lithium. India, surprisingly, is supporting Russia while China favors multi-literalism over punishing sanctions. Ann will lead us through the world scene on trade and political alliances to show us how trade, once a guarantor of peace is now weaponized and what it means for all of us.

Speaker:  Ann Berg is a leading expert in commodities, commodity futures, and food security issues. She is a former grain exporter, futures trader and Chicago Board of Trade director. She has worked for intergovernmental organizations including the World Bank (WB), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the European Commission, policy think tanks and multinational corporations. As an emerging market specialist, she has participated in commodity exchange development in Turkey, Egypt, India, Vietnam, Ukraine, and Trinidad. Between 2010 and 2021, she was senior advisor to the United Nations - Food and Agricultural Organization in Rome, Italy. Ms. Berg also writes for financial publications and is an exhibiting artist.
