Tour of the Chicago Botanic Garden

Time: We will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the round pond at the entry to the garden. When everyone is ready, we will catch the tram which leaves every half hour. The tram trip is 45 minutes long and covers the entire garden. Thus this is a field trip which does not require much walking, and is available to anyone.

Cost: Admission is free. Guests are welcome and encouraged! There is a $7 parking fee for each car driven by a senior, so carpools are a good idea when possible. For each car driven by a non-senior, non-member is $20. Members park for free. The cost of the tram ride varies from $5 to $3 depending on whether one is a senior, a Botanic Garden member, or both, so we will pay fares individually.

Optional Lunch: The Botanic Garden has a nice cafeteria with a wide variety of choices including salads.

It has indoor and outdoor seating overlooking a pond. We are not pre-arranging the cost because some IWA members may live close enough to go home for lunch, and it is also possible to picnic in certain areas.

Driving time: The route is direct: up the Edens Expressway (Rte. 94) to the Lake-Cook turnoff (East). The garden entrance is clearly marked at the right, soon after the turnoff. Allow an hour’s travel time, although it is 45 minutes in good traffic.

What makes this event extra-special?

1) Each car pool can decide whether they want to revisit parts of the garden or shop in the excellent gift shop before heading back to Chicago.

2) This is the perfect opportunity to introduce a guest or prospective IWA member to other IWA members in a relaxed setting.

INSIDER’S CHICAGO PROGRAM
Walking Tour of Grant Park

On Tuesday, June 23, IWA member Susanna Doolin will lead a summer walking tour of Grant Park. Grant Park is
Chicago’s principal downtown park located between Michigan Avenue and Lake Michigan. It is full of beautiful gardens, hidden pathways, historic monuments, a series of bridges that span across the city’s railway tracks and fabulous city views. You will discover the beauty, charm and history of Grant Park just as Susanna has through her many walks in this area over a 25-year period. Flowers will be out in bloom, the grass will be green and the temperatures perfect, so come and enjoy this unique experience. Let’s have some fun!

Those wishing to join should be able to walk for at least an hour and a half to two hours. There will be one or two
sit-down breaks along the way. Concession stands and washrooms will be available. Please be prepared and wear
comfortable walking shoes and a hat and/or sunscreen. Fanny packs or sling bags may be more comfortable than purses along this walk. There are water fountains along the route, but feel free to bring your own water bottle.
Don’t forget to bring your camera!

We will meet at the “Bean” (Cloud Gate) directly east of Michigan Avenue near Washington and Madison Streets in
Millennium Park at 9:30 a.m. and reward ourselves with an optional lunch afterwards at a nearby restaurant.
Parking is available at Millennium Park.

$10 donation to IWA payable upon arrival in Grant Park. Guests are welcome and encouraged!
